PLANTS, PEOPLE AND CULTURE

BIO 103 is a general one-semester introductory course in plant biology. Topics to be included are basic plant structures and functions, psychoactive drugs, plant poisons, medicinal uses, as well as economic and ornamental uses. Plants and their impact upon society from both a contemporary and historical perspective will be examined. Inquiry based laboratory exercise, audiovisual materials, research using the Internet and current readings are included. Recommended for non-science majors.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Plants and Society 5th Edition, Estelle Levetin, Karen McMahon

This course will consist of 3 major units. The units include Plants in our Lives, Medicinal Plants, Psychoactive Plants, Poisonous Plants, Origins of Agriculture, Feeding a Hungry World, Stimulating Beverages, Wild Edible Plants, Materials: Cloth, Paper and Wood, Ethobotany, and Ornamental Plants.
